Psychology Advisement

If you are finishing your degree and graduating after the current semester, congratulations!

If you are not graduating, it is time to begin selecting classes for next semester. Email your academic advisor if you have questions or would like to set up an advisement meeting.

To find out when you can register, consult the registration schedule on the Records office webpage. The link to the schedule PDF is near the bottom of the page under Registration Schedule.

Before Contacting Your Advisor

  1. Review your degree progress in Self Service. Decide which courses you need to take next (see guidelines below).
  2. Look over the course offerings for next semester.
  3. Add the courses you would like to take on Self Service and a few alternatives in case your first choices are unavailable.
  4. Email your advisor when your proposed schedule is on Self Service so they can review it.

If a Class Is Closed

If a class has no available seats, you can choose another section or course, or ask for permission to be added to the closed class. You will need to email the course instructor to ask for permission.

Course Planning by Year

First Year Students

  • Five 3-credit courses each semester is the standard full-time course load.
  • Take PSY 101 if you have not completed it. It is a prerequisite for all other PSY classes.
  • If you are taking PSY 101 now or have already completed it:
    • You do not need a separate math course for Quantitative Reasoning (Pillar II), because PSY 221, usually taken in the fall of the second year, fulfills that requirement.
    • You may not need a separate Natural Science Inquiry (NSI) course because you will take two NSI psychology courses. This depends on what minor you choose, if you choose a minor.
    • Take one or two 200-level PSY courses, such as 201, 211, 215, 231, or 245.
    • Take two or three Pillar II Inquiry courses, such as Religion, Philosophy, English, or History.

Second Year Students

  • Take PSY 222 if you are currently taking PSY 221 or have already completed it.
  • Take one or two other required PSY courses. Your remaining courses can be used to complete other degree requirements.
  • If you are planning to attend graduate school, talk to any faculty member about getting research experience.

Third Year Students

  • Take PSY 222 if you are currently taking PSY 221 or have already completed it.
  • Take PSY 361.
  • If you are planning to attend graduate school, talk to any faculty member about getting research experience.

Fourth Year Students

  • Take PSY 361 and PSY 481 if you have not already completed them. Both are required for graduation.
  • Check with the Dean's office if you would like to verify that you are on track to graduate.
  • If you plan to attend graduate school, be aware that some application deadlines occur in the fall and others early in the spring. Talk with a psychology faculty member about the graduate school application process.
